Wheelchair Assessment and Seating Physiotherapy CPD course Aims to
With the increase in wheelchair users to almost 3.3 million, wheelchair can provide primary means of mobility thus improving the quality of life and independence in individuals with musculoskeletal or neurological diagnosis. Equally important are optimal seating systems, which play a crucial role in preventing complications such as pressure ulcers and musculoskeletal issues.
This course will delve into essential topics including the principles of wheelchair assessment, exploration of various wheelchair types and seating options, strategies for individualizing prescriptions based on specific needs and conditions, and the significance of continuous evaluation and adjustments.
Physiotherapy Course goal: To Equip participants to perform wheelchair positioning assessments and implement interventions for diverse needs (orthopedic, paediatric, and neurological geriatric)
Learning outcomes
- Understand key principles of wheelchair positioning, its impact on health, risks of improper positioning, and wheelchair components.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments, evaluate posture, pressure distribution, and pressure injury risks, utilize assessment tools (anthropometrics and pressure mapping) and interpret findings
- Develop tailor-made plans, adjust wheelchair components, implement population-specific positioning strategies (orthopedic, pediatric, neurological, and geriatric population) , and educate patients and caregivers on proper wheelchair use and maintenance.
