With the increase in wheelchair users to almost 3.3 million, wheelchair can provide primary means of mobility thus improving the quality of life and independence in individuals with musculoskeletal or neurological diagnosis. Equally important are optimal seating systems, which play a crucial role in preventing complications such as pressure ulcers and musculoskeletal issues.

This course will delve into essential topics including the principles of wheelchair assessment, exploration of various wheelchair types and seating options, strategies for individualizing prescriptions based on specific needs and conditions, and the significance of continuous evaluation and adjustments.

Physiotherapy Course goal: To Equip participants to perform wheelchair positioning assessments and implement interventions for diverse needs (orthopedic, paediatric, and neurological geriatric)

Learning outcomes

  1. Understand key principles of wheelchair positioning, its impact on health, risks of improper positioning, and wheelchair components.
  2. Conduct comprehensive assessments, evaluate posture, pressure distribution, and pressure injury risks, utilize assessment tools (anthropometrics and pressure mapping) and interpret findings
  3.  Develop tailor-made plans, adjust wheelchair components, implement population-specific positioning strategies (orthopedic, pediatric, neurological, and geriatric population) , and educate patients and caregivers on proper wheelchair use and maintenance.

Additional learning : Gain a comprehensive understanding of current research, best practices and documentation requirements, and communication strategies for successful intervention.

  1. Evaluate Postural support in 3 types of sitters: handsfree, hands-dependent and prop 
  2. Clinical decision-making in the assessment for and application of the most appropriate wheelchair based on individual patient needs
  3. Identify clinical applications in pediatric, geriatric, and bariatric populations.

Course Instructor

Dr. Rina’s physical therapy career spans over 23 years, through the UK, the USA and the Middle East. She has worked in Nationalized Healthcare Services, American health care and self pay services in acute care, in-patient rehab, skilled nursing facility, home healthcare and outpatient clinic. In addition to being a clinician she has developed specialty programs based on evidence-based practice in her role as a project manager. She has also managed the Physical Therapy department in the capacity of Head of Department in a premier private hospital in Oman. Rina is an internationally published webinar presenter; many of her courses are highlighted on Physiopedia/ Physio Plus. Dr. Pandya graduated from Manipal University, India in 2000 as well as University of Michigan, in 2018 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy.
